Our Story

David grew up in Washington  DC, but he always had a yearning to farm.  At 25, he moved to Kansas to work for several family farms.  There he got hands-on experience handling cattle, hogs, and row crop farming.  In Kansas, he studied organic and sustainable farming practices and became acquainted with the Land Institute in Salina Kansas, Practical Farmers of Iowa, and Dick and Sharon Thompson's work with ridge till row crop practices.

After 4 years in the midwest, David headed back east to volunteer at Koinonia Community in Georgia, where he also met Pattie.  The new couple moved to Darlington, SC to rent land to start their own free range chicken farm in 1993. Over the next twenty years, David and Pattie had three girls (Lillian, Louise, and Sonora) and continued to raise chicken, grass fed cattle, and, most recently, pigs. In 2014 they bought their own land in Darlington and adopted the name Maypop Farm, named for the plant that is abundant on the sandy hilltop.

The mission of Maypop Farm is to provide healthy and humanely raised products to customers around the country. We're happy you're here, and don't hesitate to reach out to us with inquiries you have. After all, we've got the best tastin' chicken in South Carolina!
